The saying goes that 6 degrees of separation exist between any 2 people on the planet. On Saturday, January 10th, we put this saying to the test. A call-out was made on Facebook asking families and friends of Field to visit the Falcon Nest web site. Google Analytics had been added and we wanted to show the Web Design club how we could track the number of visits to the site and from where they visited. Our results were much more exciting than we anticipated. Folks turned the exercise into a game, to see how many people they could drive to the site. Family and friends were contacted through text, email and social media. As shown on the map below, we were able to get over 500 visits from 40 states and 30 countries:
As expected, the biggest concentration of the hits came from the US and more specifically the Louisville area:
But the number of hits across the US were pretty impressive too:
Field is quite proud of it's diverse student body. With several parents attending the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminaries, Field has the honor of educating students from towns and cities throughout the United States and around the world. Flags hang in the halls representing the varied countries of origin for Field families. The data provided by Google Analytics and this exercise reinforces the wide reach of the Field Elementary community. If you are curious about the raw number, the links below will give you that data:
As a fun side note when looking at the data, we've identified a hacker in Russia who repeatedly scans the site.

This video was filmed, edited, and produced by Field Elementary students. By attaching a GoPro to a student and recording her day, we wanted to show everyone how fun it is to be a Field Elementary kindergartner. The songin the video is "Pump it Up" by Elvis Costello. As part of the AV Club, students learn to produce videos with Adobe Premier. To see more videos created by Field Students, please visit the Field Elementary STLP YouTube page.

GitHub is a source control management system. A source control repository works like a library where you can change the book text. Instead of books, we change the web pages for our web site. At GitHub we have the Field-Elementary repository. Thanks to the GitHub Education Team we upgraded to a Bronze plan and got a free private repository. This allows us to restrict access to just members of our club. At Field Elementary, we have a Web Design club. Our web site is the Falcon Nest. We have a calendar and blog. We post when cool stuff happens and what is happening. We call ourselves the Field Web Ninjas.
For our first GitHub project, we used the book Cat in the Hat. Page 18 has 18 lines of text. We drew numbers out of a hat. If you drew number 3, you would type line number 3 into this file: CatIntheHat.txt. Then we committed the change from different computers. Even though we were all changing the same file, GitHub merged our changes without a problem. As each club member committed a change, we got a GitHub Octocat sticker as a reward. These Octocat stickers were very popular. One member of the club started saving up her allowance money to buy a t-shirt. When we told the GitHub Educational Team about the group's love of the Octocat, they sent more stickers and gave us a discount on shirts. With this discount, we bought shirts for everyone in the club.

On Friday January 9th, Field Elementary had a spelling bee. The fourth and fifth grade classes each had a spelling bees in their classrooms to decide the three participants for their class. The three winners of the class went on to participate in the spelling. The students compete in multiple rounds until there is a winner declared. The last round was Kiana Jordan (Field's winner last year) and Ben Mowery. It lasted a few turns until Ben won on the word "Silhouette." Ben is in Mrs. Schmidt's class and his class was very happy for him. Ben will going on to the district spelling bee in February and if Ben isn't able to attend, Kiana will take his place.
